CANTON, OH: It was rivalry Tuesday for the Walsh Women's Basketball team as they traveled down Market Ave. to face the Malone Pioneers. The Maroon and Gold previously faced their foe on January 23rd, falling to the 2nd place Pioneers, 63-49. In the 61st annual Mayor's Cup, the Cavs looked to knock off one of the top team in the conference.
The Cavaliers battled tough for the first 20 minutes, testing the home team and taking a 37-35 lead into the half. Lights out shooting propelled the Cavs to one of their best halves of the season. From the floor, Walsh shot 65.28% from to score a consistent 19 points and 18 points in each of the opening quarters.
The second half was a different story as the Maroon and Gold struggled, incredibly. Only making 4 shots from the field, Malone's zone defense suffocated Walsh forcing a tough offensive display. Malone took full advantage, outscoring Walsh 35-12 in the last 20 minutes.
Walsh will look to bounce back in Columbus vs Ohio Dominican on Saturday.
