NORTH CANTON, OH: The Walsh University softball team split a doubleheader with Wheeling University on Wednesday at the Walsh Softball Complex. The Cavaliers dropped the first game 3-0 before bouncing back with a 12-4 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, Wheeling jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the sixth to secure the 3-0 win. Walsh's offense was held to just four hits, with Jenna Jaffee collecting two of them including a double. Jaelyn Peterson took the loss for the Cavaliers, pitching four innings and allowing two runs.
The Walsh bats came alive in game two, erupting for 12 runs on 15 hits. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Cavaliers scored in four straight innings to pull away. Leah Musall led the offensive onslaught, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Hope Barrett drove in three runs on two doubles, while Hannah Pfundt blasted a two-run homer. Freshman Katie Gardner earned the win in the circle, allowing just one unearned run in 2.1 innings of work.
With the split, Walsh moves to 4-11 on the season while Wheeling sits at 4-15. The Cavaliers will look to build on their game two success when they travel to face Northwood University for a doubleheader on Saturday.
