CANTON, OH: The Walsh University softball team split a doubleheader with rival Malone University on Friday, April 11, winning the opener 5-3 before falling 3-2 in the second game. The Cavaliers now stand at 10-20 overall, while the Pioneers move to 18-11.
In the first game, Walsh overcame an early deficit behind clutch hitting. After Malone took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Danielle Stewart's RBI double tied the game in the third. Malone regained a 3-1 advantage with two unearned runs in their half of the third, but Walsh rallied late. Stewart scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, followed by Maci Smythe's RBI single to tie the game. Stewart delivered again in the seventh with another double to drive in the go-ahead run, with Madi Russo adding insurance via sacrifice fly. Chloe Sayre (5-3) pitched a complete game victory, allowing just one earned run while striking out five.
The second game saw Malone jump out early with two runs in the first inning, adding another in the third. Walsh chipped away with runs in the fifth (sacrifice fly by Lindsey Bingham) and sixth (unearned run by Sydney Becks), but couldn't complete the comeback. Lindsey Leeds (0-4) took the loss despite allowing just three runs over 2.2 innings.
