NORTH CANTON, OH: The Walsh University Football team is 4-0 after earning a 14-7 victory over the Ohio Dominican University Panthers on Saturday afternoon. This was Walsh's first win over ODU in 13 years. With a record crowd on hand, the Cavs fought on both sides of the ball to pull out their fourth straight win.
The Maroon and Gold game featured both G-MAC teams entering undefeated, as Walsh dominated Kentucky Wesleyan last week and Ohio Dominican upset usual conference powerhouse, Tiffin.
On the first series of the game, star QB,
Hayden Wickard, went down with an apparent arm injury. In came true Freshman,
Cole Norris, from Amherst Steele High School. Norris managed the Walsh offense but the efforts could never fully get anything going.
The Cavalier defensive efforts held consistent like the first three games, only giving up one ODU score at the end of the 2nd quarter. The third quarter, both teams truly battled trading possessions.
The fourth quarter was when Larry Staudt Field started rocking as all the momentum turned to the Walsh Cavaliers. Right at the turn of the quarter,
Jake Gill found the end zone on a 14 yard run, tying the game at 7. The following kick off,
Jarrad Kerekes and the Walsh Special Teams executed a perfect onside kick, giving the Cavs the ball back. The offense ended up punting but then the Walsh defense held the Panthers to a three and out which eventually set up the game winning score. Norris completed four straight passes to lead the Walsh Cavaliers down the field then used his legs to get into the end zone on a one yard run, giving the home team the edge.
With 4:35 left, the Panthers threatened until
Ty Miller secured the one handed interception at the goal line to get the offense back on the field in victory formation.
The 4-0 start is the best start since 2001. Walsh will take their momentum to next week as they welcome the 25th ranked, University of Findlay Oilers to North Canton. Kick off is set for Saturday, October 4th, at 1pm.
