WHEELING, WV: Walsh Football traveled to Wheeling University on Saturday evening, earning their 2nd victory of the season. The Maroon and Gold wasted no time, scoring on their opening drive, thanks to a
Hayden Wickard 26 yard run. Wickard commanded the Cavalier offense all evening, making plays in the air and on the ground. He accounted for 4 touchdowns, 3 passing and 1 rushing. Along with Wickard, the Walsh offense was complemented by running back,
Jake Gill, and receivers,
Austin Knowles and
Trey Martin. Gill accounted for 163 total yards, Knowles caught 5 passes for 108 yards with 2 touchdowns, and Martin totaled 4 receptions for 104 yards and snagged a touchdown pass.
The solid offense was backed by tough defensive efforts from the Maroon and Gold as they flustered the Cardinals all evening with pressure in all directions. 8 broken up passes, four tackles for loss, and 1 interception kept the Wheeling offense at bay.
Eddie Nichols and
Donovan Daetwyler each had six total tackles, leading Walsh.
The Cavaliers will head in to the bye week with a 2-0 record. They will open up Great Midwest play on September 20th, at Kentucky Wesleyan. Last season, Walsh defeated the Panthers, 54-10.
