MORGANTOWN AND SALEM, WV: In their second weekend of competition, Walsh Baseball played in the Atlantic Regional Preview hosted by Salem University and Fairmont State. The Cavs faced three teams in Frostburg State, University of Illinois Springfield, and Glenville State University. Despite competitive starts, the team fell in all three games, with a common theme of struggling at the plate.
Against Frostburg State, the score was 0-0 until the Bobcats opened up scoring in the top of the 4th inning. Key at bats from
Andrew Morse,
Bryce Broom and
Josh Algarin cut the lead to 5-2 but Frostburg scored four more runs in the 8th and 9th innings to secure the win. Walsh fell, 9-3.
The game vs Illinois Springfield was similar to the first game of the weekend with a competitive game of 1-1 through 4.5 innings. The 5th and 6th innings took the Cavs out of it as UIS exploded for 5 runs in each inning. Despite scoring 4 runs in the top of the 8th, the 11-2 deficit was too large. The final score was 11-6. UIS totaled 18 hits.
In the weekend's final game, Walsh got down early, 4-0 through 5 innings. An error by Glenville scored
Andrew Morse for the Cavs lone run. Walsh fell, 5-1.
