NORTH CANTON, OH: Walsh University Men's Soccer earned its first win of the season Wednesday night with a 1-0 victory over Slippery Rock University. After a scoreless first half,
Bobby Moore scored the only goal of the match in the 51st minute, finishing a chance created by
Kostas Paxos to put the Cavaliers in the lead. Walsh kept the lead the rest of the game to secure the shutout win.
Both teams had chances in the first 45 minutes, but neither was able to break through. Slippery Rock outshot Walsh 9-5 in the half, while the Cavaliers nearly grabbed the lead on a penalty kick in the 21st minute.
Aleksandar Miketic's attempt was stopped by Slippery Rock goalkeeper Troy Nine, sending the teams into halftime tied 0-0.
Walsh wasted little time creating the difference after halftime. In the 51st minute,
Bobby Moore finished a chance set up by
Kostas Paxos, putting the Cavaliers ahead 1-0.
Slippery Rock continued to push for an equalizer throughout the second half, but Walsh goalkeeper
Pedro Costa and the Cavalier defense kept The Rock off the scoreboard. Costa made six saves after halftime and eight total in the match to complete the shutout. Slippery Rock finished with 18 total shots compared to Walsh's 10, but the Cavaliers took away the win.
Walsh will stay at home for its next match up, taking on Purdue University Northwest at Larry Staudt Field on September 5th.
