Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Walsh (5-1, 1-1) erased a nine-point second half deficit to earn their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season, 69-63, over 20th ranked Michigan Tech University (3-2, 0-2) at Alumni Arena. The Cavs hit the road to Michigan next week, playing Northwood University on Thursday (8pm) and Lake Superior State on Saturday (3pm). Both games will be broadcast live on WNPQ FM, 95.9.
Walsh led by as many as 11 points (25-14) in the first half, but led only 32-28 at the break. Michigan Tech's Ben Stelzer tallied 15 points on three three-pointers as the Huskies climbed back into the game in the five minutes of the half.
With the game tied at 36-all with 15:30 to play, the Huskies went on a 12-3 run to take a nine point lead at 48-39 with 13:07 to play.
Sparked by freshman Steven Carpenter's (6-3, Lancaster, OH/Fairfield Christian Academy) three-ball to close the gap to 42-38, Walsh used a 13-0 run to regain the lead (49-48) on a Jesse Hardin Jr. (6-2, Jr., Warren, OH/Harding) steal and lay-up with 10:52 to play.
Michigan Tech would take one more lead, at 50-49, on a Kyle Stankowski jumper at 9:40. Hardin Jr. then hit his first three-ball of the game and was fouled for a four-point play to give Walsh a lead they never relinquished at 53-50 with 7:43 left.
The Huskies closed to with two points at 53-52 with 6:50 left, but would not regain the lead, or tie the contest the rest of the way.
Walsh would hit its final ten free throws to seal the win. Hardin Jr. hit five straight free throws and scored seven of Walsh's final nine points.
Walsh bounced back from a poor shooting night (35%) against Northern Michigan on Thursday to shoot 55% on 22-40. The Cavs were 20-25 (.800) from the line.
Trey Fletcher (6-6, So., Ironton, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with 16 points on 5-8 from the floor. Jeff Copeland (6-3, Sr., Toledo, OH/St. John's Jesuit) added 15 points on 5-7 from field and Hardin Jr. had 14 points, was a perfect 5-5 from the line and grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
Michigan Tech's Ben Stelzer led all scorers with 27 points, but was held to 9-20 from the field.
