Cavs Rally for Split at Ashland

(ASHLAND, Ohio) - Walsh (20-23, 13-13) rallied for a split of an important GLIAC double header at Ashland University (22-16, 12-11) today. Walsh lost game one 8-6, but rallied to win the nightcap 4-2 in eight innings. The Cavs remain in fifth place in the GLIAC, one-half behind the fourth place Eagles. The two teams play the rubber game of the series at 1 pm at Ashland tomorrow. The game will be broadcast live on TEAMLINE.

Walsh wasted a 6-0 lead in the opener, as the Eagles rallied for an 8-6 win. The Cavs led 1-0 when they scored four times in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Jordan Shank (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak), who went 2-2 with two walks, drove in a run in the fourth, and had three RBI. Drew Link (Sr., Granville, OH/HS) drove in a pair with a two-run single in the fourth, and Brook Clark (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) scored three runs, after walking twice and being hit by a pitch. Walsh led 6-0 in the fifth, when Ashland scored five times to chase starter Brandon Whitslar (Sr., Dover, OH/HS) and close the gap to 6-5. They would then tally three more runs in the sixth to complete the comeback.

Andrew Bonnette (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) had two key RBI singles in the nightcap. Bonnette's two-out single scored Shank in the fifth inning to tie game at 1-1. Ashland regained the lead with a run in the sixth, and were one out away from a sweep when Shank reached base on a error in the seventh. Link the singled Shank to second, and Bonnette tied the game with a single. The Cavs then scored two runs in the eighth, after two key errors by the Eagles. Johnny Knight (R-Fr., Jefferson, OH/Area) led off the inning with a double down the left-field line, and advanced to third base when the Ashland left fielder misplayed the ball. Justin Clements (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) then stroked a one-out single to center to break the tie. After Clements advanced to second on a ground ball, he scored on an error to give the Cavs a 4-2 lead. Neal Edwards (Jr., Silver Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) then worked a scoreless seventh for his fifth save of the season. Ian Drapcho (Sr., Dover, OH/HS) picked-up his second win of the season in relief. Walsh starter Joe Tann (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) had his second straight strong outing, working 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He fanned five.

Clements went 3-4 in game two, and Shank had two more hits. Bonnette was 2-3.
