Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - A three-goal effort in the second half helped push Walsh by a talented Cal (Pa.) squad by a score of 3-2 in non-conference action at Milazzo Field Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers are now 3-0 on the young season. The Vulcans drop to 1-2-1.
It was the Vulcans that struck first on a Russell Tattersall score in the 15th minute on an assist from Cory Kuzilla. It was the only score of the first half.
Fireworks figuratively went off shortly after the start of the second half as Sam Mountstephens scored an unassisted goal off of a misplayed ball by the Cal back line to tie the game in the 54th minute. It helped turn the momentum in favor of the Cavs who then used it to their advantage.
Seven minutes later, Brett Sparks scored the go-ahead goal on a shot from the right side of the box to the left lower 90. It was his first goal of the season as Michael Saddler provided the assist. Walsh kept the pressure on as Mountstephens made the score 3-1 on a forceful shot that sped by the Cal keeper who could only get his fingertips on the ball before it went into the left side of the net at 74:25. Lucas Dunlap was credited with the assist on Mounstephens' fourth goal of the year.
It eventually became the game-winning goal as the Vulcans refused to give up and scored a second goal, also by Tattersall, in the 80th minute. The Walsh defense was able to shut them down the rest of the way to pick up the big non-conference win.
Ayman Youssef picked up the win to also improve to 3-0 between the pipes. He made six saves on 15 shots faced.
Walsh will now gear up for a pair of conference games to cap off the home-stand. First up will be a talented Saginaw Valley State squad. Kick-off with the Cardinals is scheduled for 7 p.m.
