Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – A first half explosion and another total team effort guided Walsh to a 5-2 victory over visiting Northwood on a hot Sunday afternoon GLIAC contest. The Cavaliers (5-1-2, 2-0-1) scored four goals in the first 45 minutes to inundate the Timberwolves (1-5-1, 0-3).
The Cavaliers scored early and often with three goals in the first 20 minutes of play. Emily Durina sparked the offense with her second goal of the season on a centered pass from Kristen Conti on the left side of the box 9:38 into the game. Conti then added a goal of her own and an assist up the middle of the field by Madison Strausbaugh in the 17th minute to make the score 2-0. It was Conti's fifth goal of the year.
Jessie Gearhart added another goal almost two minutes later when she headed a ball perfectly placed by Sarah Berger on a corner kick at 18:40.
Northwood eventually found the back of the net as Shannon Brown scored on a centered pass from Sara Lamphere to make the score 3-1 at 38:16, but Gemma Hicks scored Walsh's fourth goal just over five minute later right before the half. Hicks shot the ball which was initially saved and followed up with another shot that went by the goalie.
In the second half, Brown added her second goal to cut Northwood's deficit to 4-2, but Gearhart added the final tally on a penalty kick at 68:11. It was her GLIAC-best seventh goal of the season. She also leads the conference in points with 15. Conti is third on that list with 13 and Durina is tied for fifth with 10.
This was Walsh's fourth game of the season were at least three different players scored goals.
Dani Shambaugh and Michaella Stucky split time between the pipes with each making two saves in 45 minutes of play.
The Cavs now have a long road trip ahead of them as they travel to the Upper Peninsula for next weekend's games. Walsh will visit Northern Michigan first on Friday at 4 p.m. before traveling even farther west to take on Michigan Tech on Sunday at noon.
