Box Score (CLARION, Pa.) – Kelsey Funderburgh had a career day as she led the Cavaliers to a 76-57 victory on the road against Clarion Monday evening. The senior guard scored 26 points to go over 1,000 for her collegiate career. All but 57 have been scored with the Cavaliers.
The majority of those came in the first half as Walsh jumped out to a 46-28 lead at the half. Funderburgh scored 18 of her points by that point. Of course plenty of other components were going well for the Cavaliers to take a double-digit first half lead.
Walsh shot 20-of-34 in the first half for an offensive spark it's missed so far this season. Forcing Clarion into 12 turnovers also helped as it generated into 20 points on the Cavalier end. It turned the momentum tide in the game in which the Golden Eagles led for most of the first half before being outmatched in the second.
The Cavaliers didn't lead until a Funderburgh layup with 2:29 left in the opening quarter and outscored Clarion 24-10 to take control of the game.
"I'm proud of the way we bounced back tonight," said Coach Maria Marchesano after the win. "We finally go out in transition and created some points off turnovers which we haven't done well yet this year."
That transition also helped the Cavs as 18 of their points came on the fast break. Despite the Eagles shooting 50 percent for the first half, none of their points were on the fast break for the game.
Overall Funderburgh was 12-of-22 for the game with four steals, three rebounds, and two assists. She was 8-of-10 in the first half with 18 points. The 12 field goals are a career high.
Alex Hochstedler added 12 points as the only other double-figure scorer for Walsh. Brittni Clopton and Brooklyn Wooten led the team with six rebounds.
Tyra Polite paced Clarion with 19 points. Delrika Jones-Carey added 12 and Jordan Bekelja added 10.
Walsh is now off until December when it heads to the Upper Peninsula for GLIAC play. The Cavs' first conference game will come on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Northern Michigan. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
