Strong Fourth Quarter Gives Walsh Win Over Northwood

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – A dominating fourth quarter helped Walsh to a 79-74 victory over visiting Northwood in GLIAC action on Thursday evening at Alumni Arena. The Cavaliers (4-2, 2-1) outscored the Timberwolves (5-4, 1-2) 30-18 in the final frame to come from behind and take the win.

The Cavaliers were down seven to start the last period and went on a 10-2 run to regain the lead at 59-58 after a steal by Kelsey Funderburgh that led to a Brooklyn Wooten layup with 7:31 to go. Despite a 7-0 run by Northwood, Walsh stayed composed and outscored the Timberwolves 20-9 in the last five minutes for the win.

Wooten sparked the rally with a 3-pointer which was followed by a pair of big baskets on a layup and 3-pointer by Holly Grober. That gave the Cavs a 67-65 lead and they didn't trail again the rest of the game. The Timberwolves did tie the game again at 67-all, but Brittni Clopton followed with a layup paired with and And-1 opportunity to put the Cavs back up three. Funderburgh then came up with a pivotal steal and took the ball coast-to-coast and gave Walsh a 74-67 lead with 2:26 to play.

Northwood's final push came after that with the next five points, but that was the closest it could get as Walsh finished 12-of-15 for the fourth quarter.

Four Cavaliers scored in double-figures as Clopton lead the way with23 markers. As dominate as the Cavaliers were in the fourth quarter, Clopton was in the first as 12 of those points came in the first 10 minutes. She was 10-of-15 for the night and added nine rebounds, also a game-high. She was 6-of-8 in the first quarter alone.

Alex Hochstedler was also impressive with 21 points on the night. She was 7-of-11 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. Funderburgh added 11 and was also at 50 percent with a 5-of-10 clip on the night. Defensively she was strong with a five steals. Wooten also found herself all over the place with 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.

Overall, it was Walsh's best shooting night on the young season as the Cavs made 57.1 percent of its shots. They were 32-of-56 from the field while their previous best was a 45.7 percent night at Clarion.

The Cavaliers look to make it a perfect weekend as they entertain Lake Superior State at home on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
