Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh used a dominating fourth quarter to pull away from a pesky Lake Superior State team to win by a 66-50 margin on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The Cavaliers (5-2, 3-1) made it a perfect weekend and handed the Lakers (2-6, 1-3) a second consecutive loss.
The score was much closer for the first three quarters as the Cavaliers led by just three points to close the third quarter. The score was tied at 43-all before Kesley Funderburgh nailed a 3-pointer to give Walsh the lead for good with 57 seconds left in the third quarter. It jump-started an 18-3 run for Walsh to separate itself from Lake State.
Funderburgh hit three treys during that stretch and Holly Grober also added a bonus bomb as the Cavs started to heat up around the perimeter. Even though the Lakers hit nine 3-pointers earlier in the game, they couldn't keep up and hit one in the final 10 minutes. It was one of two field goals in the quarter as the Cavaliers outscored LSSU by a 20-7 margin.
Funderburgh's treys helped her reach double-figures with a game-high 15 points. Defensively she added three steals to go along with three rebounds.
Holly Grober was the only other Cavalier in double-figures with 13 points. She was 6-of-12 from the field, but gave Lake Superior State fits on the defensive end as she blocked four shots for a new career-best. Brittni Clopton had a solid overall day as she added seven points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Mackenzie Edwards led the way for the Lakers with 13 points with three 3-pointers. Walsh's defense stymied the rest of the offense and kept the Lakers' leading scorer Tamara Novic to just four points in the game.
Walsh is now done with conference play for the calendar year and will suit up two more times before Christmas break in non-conference action. First up will be a date with Head Coach Maria Marchesano's former team Urbana. The Cavaliers and Blue Knights tip off at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Ashland.
