Box Score (HOUGHTON, Mich.) – Double-doubles from Jesse Hardin Jr. and Chall Montgomery and a season-high 22 points from Zac Carter helped Walsh to an 83-71 victory at Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (3-2, 2-0) have now won three-straight as they return home from the opening GLIAC weekend in the Upper Peninsula.
Walsh started the game on fire as it made its first five shots in the game en route to an 11-5 lead. The Huskies (2-3, 1-1) climbed back into the contest and eventually took the lead on a layup by A.J. Grazulis with 7:54 to go in the first half that made the score 28-27.
It was Michigan Tech's only lead of the game and didn't last long as Montgomery answered with a 3-pointer. The Huskies tied the game a couple of more times before the Cavs closed the half with a 9-3 run to go into the locker room with a 41-35 lead.
After Tech's Jeff Gregory made a 3-pointer to bring the Huskies back within a possession near the start of the second half, Walsh exploded for a 20-5 run to take control of the game. Carter capped it with a layup and gave the Cavaliers their largest lead of the game at 63-45 with 10:54 to go in the game.
Montgomery and Carter were main components of opening the flood gates. Montgomery pulled down the seven of the Cavaliers' first eight rebounds of the second half and 10 during the last 20 minutes. Carter exploded for 15 of his-game-high during that time as well.
Tech scratched back once again and cut the deficit to six after Bryan Heath's 3-pointer made the score 77-71, but it was the final points for the hosts as Trey Fletcher answered with a jumper before Hardin Jr. and Carter each made a pair of free throws.
Hardin Jr. finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Montgomery's 11 points and 15 rebounds gave him his first double-double of the year. Fletcher scored 13 points to round out the Walsh players in double figures.
Heath scored 16 points to lead the Huskies. Jeff Gregory scored 13 and both Kyle Monroe and Kyle Stankowski added 12.
Overall the Maroon and Gold-shot 52.7 percent from the field and were 9-of-16 from three. The Cavs also controlled the boards by a 40-27 margin.
Walsh returns home for a pair of conference home games this weekend. The Cavs will tip off against Northwood first this Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. start.
