Box Score (TIFFIN, Ohio) - Brittni Clopton's (5-11, Fr., Ft. Wayne, IN/South Side) free throw with two seconds left gave Walsh a thrilling 64-63 victory over Tiffin in GLIAC action Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (17-8, 11-8) narrowly avoided an impressive comeback attempt by the Dragons (7-17, 6-12).
The Cavs jumped out to a huge first half lead and led by as many as 18 after Kelsey Funderburgh (5-7, Jr., North Lewisburg, OH/Triad) hit one of her six 3-pointers in the game at the 2:36 to give Walsh an 18-point lead. Unfortunately for Walsh, it was the last field goal it would make in 7:57 minutes of in-game action.
Tiffin closed the gap with a fierce second-half comeback and eventually took its first lead of the game on an Anya Misko jumper with 9:36 to play. It was in the middle of a 15-0 run that gave the Dragons their biggest lead of the game at 54-47.
Walsh refused to give up and Funderburgh answered with another trey to end the run and give Walsh some momentum.
With 37 seconds left, Jaylnn Graham (5-5, So., Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) hit a huge shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 61-61. Tiffin's Kaylee Patton was fouled six seconds later on the hosts return trip and she sank both shots to give her team a two-point lead. On the opposite end, Clopton was also fouled and made her two shots from the charity stripe to tie the game back up at 63-63 with 26 seconds left.
A huge turnover on the inbound gave Walsh the ball back with a chance to win. Graham missed a jumper, but the ball went out of bounds with Tiffin touching the ball last. Clopton found herself with the ball with two seconds left, but she was fouled and sent to the line. She made the first and missed the second, but the Dragons were unable to get a shot off for the win.
Funderburgh led the team with a game-high 22 points. She was 7-of-16 from the field and hit 6-of-12 3-pointers. Aside from the game-winning points, Clopton also had an impressive day as she hit 6-of-9 from the field and pulled down six rebounds and two blocks. Graham finished with 12 points.
Bre Nauman paced the Dragons with 16 points.
The Cavaliers now stand two games ahead of Findlay for the third and final automatic playoff spot for the conference tournament. That sets up an important showdown this Thursday as Walsh will meet the Oilers at Croy Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
