Box Score (FINDLAY, Ohio) - A last second layup broke Walsh's heart as Findlay won an important GLIAC South battle 62-61 on Thursday evening. The Cavaliers (17-9, 11-9) were up by two possessions after a Jalynn Graham (5-5, So., Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) basket with 56 seconds to play, but the Oilers (14-10, 10-10) kept their playoff hopes alive with two big baskets in the final minute.
Graham's score mad the score 61-57, but Findlay answered with a huge 3-pointer by Ciara Geiger that made it a one-point game. Walsh did its best to run down the clock, but a Kelsey Funderburgh (5-7, Jr., North Lewisburg, OH/Triad) jumper was off the mark with nine seconds left.
The ball went out of bounds and gave Findlay a chance to set up a go-ahead play. The Oilers made it payoff as Kristin Klausing took a pass from Geiger and laid it in for the go-ahead score. She was fouled on the play by Graham, but missed the free throw. Brittni Clopton (5-11, Fr., Ft. Wayne, IN/South Side) pulled down the rebound, but Walsh was unable to get a shot off.
It was a competitive game throughout with neither team getting a huge advantage either way. Findlay's largest lead came at 24-15 after a Geiger 3-pointer, but Walsh answered with an 8-0 run to get back into the game before the Oilers went into halftime with a 30-23 lead.
The Cavs stormed bak at the beginning of the second half with a 21-6 run to take their largest lead of the game at 44-37 after a Funderburgh 3-point attempt with 14:23 to play.
Neither team shot particularly well, but both combined for 18 3-pointers. The Cavs were responsible for most of them with 11, which included five by Funderburgh. She had a team-high 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds to go with three assists and three steals.
Audrey Badovick (5-5, Sr., Norwalk, OH/St. Paul) also had a strong game from behind the arc as she score 13 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Graham was the last Walsh player in double-figures with 12 points. Clopton pulled down 10 caroms and was two points shy of a double-double.
Findlay was paced by Geiger's game-high 23 points. She was difficult to stop as she was 8-of-12 from the field with four 3-pointers.
The South Division standings tighten up even more now as the Cavaliers cling to the third and final automatic conference tournament bid from the section. They are a game ahead of the Oilers with two games left in the regular season.
Walsh will attempt to secure more of a hold onto that third spot in a couple of days as it will take on one of the top teams in the region in Wayne State on Saturday. Tip-off with the No. 4 team in the region is set for 1 p.m.
