Cavs Sweep Cal

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(WASHINGTON, Pa) Walsh (7-4) swept a non-conference double header from California (Pa.) (3-10) today by the scores of 6-5 and 11-8 at Consol Energy Park. The Cavs, who have won their last three games, open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at home with Wayne State this weekend. The teams play double headers on Saturday (1 pm) and Sunday (12 pm). Both twin bills will be broadcast live on TEAMLINE.

Walsh used a five-run fourth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit on their way to a 6-5 win in the opener. Andrew Stalnaker (So., Canton, OH/Jackson) opened the inning with single, and scored on a Johnny Knight IV (So., Jefferson, OH/Jefferson Area) double to cut the Vulcans lead to 3-2. Knight IV then scored on a Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH/Munroe Falls) single to left to tie the game at 3-3. Joey Beals (R-Fr., Canton, OH/Perry) then singled McPeek to third, and McPeek scored on Jordan Shank's (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) single to left to put the Cavs ahead 4-3. Andrew Bonnette (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) then banged a single to left to score Beals, with Shank scoring on a throwing error to give Walsh a 6-3 lead.

The Vulcans tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning, but were blanked by Mark Mittiga (So., Green, OH/Walsh Jesuit) in the fifth, and Seth Robinson (Jr., Akron, OH/Springfield) in the sixth and Kyle Ward (Jr., Independence, OH/Padua Franciscan) in the seventh. Ward picked up the save, his first of the season. The win went to Mittiga, who evened his record at 1-1.

Shank and Stalnaker each had two hits.

Walsh used the big inning twice in the night-cap to complete the sweep. The Cavs snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the second and then added five more runs in the third.

Bonnette and Stalnaker each had two hits and four RBI. Knight IV had two hits and a solo homer, Brook Clark (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) and McPeek each had three hits, and Shank scored three runs to go with a hit and RBI. Walsh collected 16 hits and led 11-1 after four innings.

Cal tacked a three runs in the sixth and seventh innings for the final outcome.

Walsh used six pitchers, with Jared Bettura (Sr., Canfield, OH/HS) pitching a scoreless inning in relief to improve to 2-0.
