Box Score (CLEARWATER, Fla.,) – Walsh doubled up former conference rival Cedarville by a score of 8-4 at Jack Russell Stadium in the second game of its spring break trip. The Cavaliers are 2-0 on the young season while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 2-2.
The Cavs' firepower picked up midway through the game as they scored seven of their eight runs in and after the fifth inning. Andrew Bonnette (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) provided a steady dose of offense as he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI on the day. Three of those were extra-base hits as he had two doubles and a triple.
Austin Szink (R-So., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Luke Caple (So., Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) also had big days with 3-hit games. Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH/Munroe Falls) had a multi-hit game as well and drove in three runs in the win.
Szink provided the first Cavs' run on a single to left to tie the game at 1-1 in the first inning. He mirrored that action in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Jordan Shank (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) gave Walsh the lead after he crossed home plate on an Andrew Stalnaker (So., Canton, OH/Jackson) single.
The Cavs added a pair of runs in the sixth before Cedarville made it a 5-4 game with two in the top of the seventh. Walsh answered with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame and another in the eighth.
Jared Bettura (Sr., Canfield, OH/HS) picked up the win after he went five innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out five against two walks.
The Cavs are back in action Tuesday with a twin bill against regional foe Lewis. The two schools are set to start at 2 p.m.
