Box Score 2 (TIFFIN, Ohio) After failing to held a 5-0 lead in game one, Walsh's bats erupted for 12 runs in the nightcap to help the Cavs (11-7, 4-2) split their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double header at Tiffin University (9-13, 4-2) today. Tiffin rallied to capture game one 6-5, with Walsh earning the split with a 12-7 win in the nightcap. The two teams wrap-up the four game series with a double header starting at 12 pm tomorrow.
Walsh jumped Tiffin starter Logan Sendelbach for four runs in the first inning of the opener keyed by Jason McPeek's (Jr., Stow, OH / Munroe Falls) two run single. Andrew Stalnaker (So., Canton, OH / Jackson) also drove in a run, with another run scoring on a Tiffin error. The Cavs would add a run in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Tiffin would begin their comeback with a three-run third inning to trim the margin to 5-3. Keyed by two walks, a hit batsmen and three wild pitches, Tiffin scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead.
The Cavs would leave runners in scoring position in the fifth and seventh innings. McPeek, Stalnaker and Joey Beals (R-Fr., Canton, OH / Perry) each had two hits. Mike Daugherty (Sr., Mayfield Village, OH / HS) took the loss in relief.
Walsh came out swinging in game two, scoring three runs in the first and second innings. Austin Szink (R-So., Canton, OH / Jackson) had a two-run double in the first inning, and then clubbed a three-run homer in the second as the Cavs led 6-2 after two innings.
Walsh added a single run in the sixth as Jerad Kitzler (So., Columbus, OH / St. Charles Prep) tripled home Beals who led off the inning with a single.
Tiffin came storming back with four runs in in the bottom of the sixth inning to chase Walsh starter Brandon Whitslar (Sr., Seville, OH / Cloverleaf).
Walsh added insurance runs in the final three innings. McPeek hit a solo homer in the seventh inning, and the Cavs added two more in the eighth on Kitzler's second triple of the game, and a Szink sacrifice fly. In the ninth, the Cavs added an unearned run when Johnny Knight IV (So., Jefferson, OH / Area) singled and Luke Caple (So., Naples, FL / Gulf Coast), who led off the inning with a double, scored on an error by the left fielder. The Cavs final run came on a fielders' choice.
Ryan McSweeney (So., Seven Hills, OH / Trinity) came on for the two inning save, and worked out of bases loaded jam when entered the game with one out in the eighth inning.
Walsh's 14-hit outburst was led by Szink who drove in six runs with two hits. Kitzler was 3-4 with two RBI and Beals was 3-5. Knight IV also had two hits. Whitslar (2-0) picked up his second win of the season and McSweeney his first save.
