Cavs Settle for Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) After winning the opener of their GLIAC double header from Tiffin University (10-14, 5-3) 7-2, Walsh (12-8, 5-3) had to settle for a split after wasting a 7-0 lead in the nightcap in falling 11-10. The teams split the four-game series. Walsh is back in action tomorrow, at home, against Slippery Rock University in a non-league double header at 1:30 pm. The Cavs return to GLIAC action on Friday when they host Lake Erie College in a twinbill in the first two games of a four-game series.

Matt Iosue (So., Mayfield, OH / HS) pitched a complete game in winning his first game of the season in the opener. The lefty scattered eight hits, fanned six and did not walk a batter.

Walsh scored two unearned runs in the first inning, and led 3-1 in the fifth when Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH / Monroe Falls) opened the game up with three-run home run to left. Johnny Knight IV (So., Jefferson, OH / Jefferson Area) added a solo blast in the seventh. Knight IV, Austin Szink (So., Canton, OH / Jackson), Luke Caple (So., Naples, FL / Gulf Coast), James Thomas (So., Columbus, OH / Newark) and Joey Beals (R-Fr., Canton, OH / Perry) all had two hits apiece.

Things look great for a sweep when Walsh scored seven runs in the first three innings of the nightcap and led 7-0.

Three Tiffin errors led to three of Walsh's first four runs. Knight IV, Thomas and Beals all drove in runs with hits in the third inning.

Tiffin began their comeback with two runs in the third, added three more runs in the fourth, and then tied the game at 7-7 with two runs in the fifth. They chased Walsh started Jared Bettura (Sr., Canfield, OH / HS) in the fifth inning.

Walsh scored an unearned to take the lead back at 8-7 in the seventh inning, and took a two-run lead (9-7) in the eighth on a Knight IV single.

Tiffin took advantage of two Walsh errors in the bottom of the eighth inning to take their first lead of the day at 10-9.

Walsh tied the game in the ninth inning on a one out single by Andrew Bonnette (Sr., Tallmadge, OH / HS), but could not get the game to extra innings as the Dragons completed the comeback with a run in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off win.

Bonnette, Szink, Andrew Stalnaker (So., Canton, OH / Jackson) and Caple each had two hits.

Matt Mittiga (So., Green, OH / Walsh) was tagged with the loss.
