Cavs Upset of No. 17 Wayne State In GLIAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

(DETROIT) – The women's basketball season remains alive for Walsh as it upset No. 17 Wayne State 72-71 in the GLIAC tournament quarterfinals Wednesday evening. The Cavaliers (20-9) are the No. 7 seed in the eight team field. The Warriors (22-5) were the No. 2 seed. The hosts' season will likely remain alive as they are ranked No. 4 in the Midwest Region.

The game had the stereotypical March Madness feel. While Walsh never trailed, Wayne State didn't bow out quietly. The Cavaliers never led by more than five points during the entire second half. Their largest lead came at 41-31 after Audrey Badovick (5-5, Sr., Norwalk, OH/St. Paul) drained a 3-pointer with 6:03 left in the first half. However, the Warriors were able to close the gap and ended the half on a 13-4 run to head in the locker room down 45-44.

The action was back and forth during the final 20 minutes. Walsh once again went up by five after a Kelsey Funderburgh (5-7, Jr., North Lewisburg, OH/Triad) trey that made the score 53-48, but Wayne State answered with a three of its own.

The Warriors eventually tied the game at 59-59 after a layup by Shareta Brown, but Funderburgh came back with a 3-pointer at the 10:19 mark. It was the penultimate tie of the game. The last time the contest was knotted up came with 2:37 left when Ondrea Hughes scored a layup.

After a Cavs turnover, Wayne State attempted to take its first lead of the game on a 3-pointer, but Jalynn Graham (5-5, So., Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) pulled down the rebound and found Badovick breaking on a fast break. Graham connected with her on the pass for the layup four seconds later to put Walsh up 72-70 with 1:09 left to go in the game.

It was the last points Walsh scored.

Just as surprising was that the Warriors only scored one point the rest of the way.

Whitney Dabbelt (6-0, Sr., West Carrollton, OH/Archbishop) fouled Brown's attempt to tie, but Brown only made the second free throw.

On Walsh's return trip, Brown pulled down the rebound from a missed shot by Graham. The Warriors called a timeout with six seconds left, but a steal by Graham with two seconds left preserved the thrilling upset victory.

The 3-point shot was very kind to the Cavaliers as they made 13-of-25 for a 52 percent clip behind the arc.

Funderburgh led the team with 20 points. Badovick was hot the entire night as she made 6-of-8 from the field for 16 points. She was 3-of-4 from three. Brooklyn Wooten (5-8, So., Grove City, OH/Central Crossing) added 13 points and also had three treys. Brittni Clopton (5-11, Fr., Ft. Wayne, IN/South Side) added 12.

GLIAC Player of the Year Brown still was able to get her normal double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Walsh now faces a division rival and No. 3 seed Ashland in the semi-finals. The two will meet in Houghton, Mich., at Michigan Tech as a result of the Huskies being the highest seed remaining. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
