Box Score 2 (CLEARWATER, Fla.) – A six-run sixth inning explosion helped propel Walsh past USciences 11-3 in an early morning meeting at Jack Russell Stadium today. The Cavaliers improve to 4-1 with the win while the Devils dropped to 0-5.
With the scored tied 2-2, the Cavs batted around the order to take control of the ball game. The Devils started the frame with a new pitcher, but he didn't last long as Walsh rattled off five consecutive hits.
Jordan Shank (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) broke the tie when he singled in Brook Clark (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley). Andrew Bonnette (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) followed with two-RBI base hit that brought in Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH/Munroe Falls) and James Thomas (So., Columbus, OH/Newark). The highlight of the inning went to Austin Szink (R-So., Canton, OH/Jackson). He gave Walsh its final runs of the frame with a three-run blast.
From there, Sherman Kruger (So., Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) largely kept the Devils' offense in check. He allowed just one run on a home run in the sixth, but that was sandwiched between four of his seven strikeouts in the game. Kruger picked up the win to improve to 1-0 as he pitched the final five innings in which he allowed just two hits.
Szink had a solid overall game as he was 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Shank also had three hits in the game. Knight IV initially got the Cavs on the scoreboard with a two-RBI double in the fourth inning. Both Bonnnette and Stalnaker added multi-hit, multi-RBI games.
In the second game against Eckerd, Walsh tied the hosts in the sixth inning at 1-1, but big innings by the Tritons put the game away and dealt the Cavs an 8-1 defeat. Eckerd scored three in the seventh and four in the eights.
The Cavs' only run came on a single by Szink that scored Shank.
Matt Iosue (So., Mayfield, OH/HS) started the game and pitched six innings. He gave up just one run on nine hits and struck out six. Mark Mittiga (So., Green, OH/Walsh Jesuit) took the loss as he pitched the last two innings in relief.
Walsh is back in action with a twin bill against Cedarville on Thursday. The first game is scheduled for 11 a.m.
