Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 (TAMPA, Fla.) – Walsh fell in both games of a doubleheader against former conference rival Cedarville in walk-off fashion by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 with the second game going eight innings. The Cavaliers (4-4) were in their penultimate day of Florida games. The Yellow Jackets (6-3) were coming off a victory against nationally ranked No. 1 Tampa.
The bulk of the scoring in game one happened in the first two innings. Walsh led off with a run thanks to a sacrifice fly Austin Szink (R-So., Canton, OH/Jackson) that scored Andrew Bonnette (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS), but Cedarville answered with a three-spot in the bottom half of the frame.
The Cavs came back to tie it when Luke Caple (So., Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) scored on a fielder's choice by James Thomas (So., Columbus, OH/Newark) and Johnny Knight IV (So., Jefferson, OH/HS) followed up and scored during the play after a throwing error on the short stop.
The score remained there until the bottom of the seventh when Mike Daugherty (Sr., Mayfield Village, OH/HS) walked Zach Huskey with the bases loaded to end the game. Seth Robinson took the loss after he was responsible for putting the winning run on base. Despite the loss, Robinson pitched a strong game as he allowed just one run on two hits with six strikeouts against two walks in 5.2 innings of work. He came on in relief after Kyle Ward (Jr., Independence, OH/Padua Franciscan) was chased in the first inning.
The second game was similar to the first. After Cedarville scored in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead, Walsh tied the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Jordan Shank (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) that brought in Joey Beals (R-Fr., Canton, OH/Perry).
However the Jackets once again took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity as David Lenhardt hit in the game-winning run on a single to center in the bottom of the eighth.
Donnie Macko (Sr., Clinton, OH/Northwest) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. Brandon Whitslar (Sr., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf) was strong in his start as he allowed one run on four hits and struck out five with two walks in six innings.
The Cavs conclude their spring break games tomorrow with a twin bill against Mansfield at Tack Field. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
