Box Score 2 (ASHLAND, Ohio) Walsh (16-20, 9-13) rallied for a split with GLIAC South Division leader Ashland University (26-10, 15-5) today at Sarver Field. Ashland took game one 8-2, with Walsh taking the nightcap 6-3. The two teams complete the four-game series with a double header at Ashland at 12pm tomorrow.
The Eagles scored three runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth inning on their way to a 8-2 win in game one of the double header. Walsh took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a ground ball that scored James Thomas (So., Columbus, OH / Newark), who singled. The Cavs added an unearned in the sixth when Thomas singled home Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH / Munroe Falls). Walsh starter Jared Bettura (Sr., Canfield, OH / HS) worked 4.1 innings and was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-3.
Walsh erased a 2-1 Ashland lead with single runs in the fourth and fifith innings, and then added a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Tyson Lautanen (So., Painesville, OH / Fairport Harbor / Eastern Kentucky) scored an uneared run to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Walsh took a 3-2 lead in the fifith inning on McPeek's two out single to left center scoring Luke Caple (So.,Naples, FL / Gulf Coast) who doubled to left-center. Walsh made it 4-2 on back-to-back doubles in the seventh inning from Jared Kitler (So., Columbus, OH / St. Charles Prep) and McPeek. The Cavs added two insurance runs in the eighth inning when Thomas scored on a wild pitch and on Caple's two out single to score Andrew Bonnette (Sr., Tallmadge, OH / HS), who had reached base on a bunt single. Left-hander Matt Iosue (So., Mayfield, OH / HS) started and went seven innings to even his record at 3-3. Iosue fanned four and scattered six hits.Ryan McSweeney (So., Seven Hills, OH / Trinity ) came on in the eighth inning and picked up his second save, fanning four of the five outs.
