Cavs Take Game For Split With Malone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(KENT, Ohio) Walsh (15-13, 8-6) and Malone University (17-13, 8-6) split a GLIAC double header today at Kent State University's Schoonover Stadium. Malone erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning of game one to win 12-3, while the Cavs came back to win the nightcap 9-6 and salvage the split. Walsh is at Northwood University for a four-game GLIAC series on Saturday and Sunday. The Cavs and Malone meet at Walsh next Wednesday in a GLIAC twinbill.

Malone took the early lead in the opener off of Cavs' starter Brandon Whitslar (Sr., Sevillle, OH / Cloverleaf) with two runs in the second inning and one in the fourth. Whitslar was charged with his first loss of the season and is now 3-1.

Walsh got two runs back in the fourth inning to trim the Malone lead to 3-2. Austin Szink (-So., Canton, OH / Jackson) led off with a double to leftfield, and advanced to third base on Andrew Stalnaker's (So., Canton, OH / Jackson) soft single to center. Szink then scored when Luke Caple (So., Naples, FL / Gulf Coast) scorched a double over the center fielder's head. Stalnaker then scored on a ground ball.

Malone chased Whitslar in the fourth inning, as the right-hander issued four walks to push across a run. Sherman Kruger (So., Chagrin Falls, OH / Kenston) then relieved Whitslar. Malone opened the game up when a misplayed a fly ball with two outs and the bases loaded turned into three runs. When all was said and done, the Pioneers pushed across nine runs to take a 12-2 lead.

Walsh scored first in the nightcap on Caple's two-run, two out double to right. Szink walked with two outs and Stalnaker singled to right, and both scored on the Caple hit. Malone came back and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Walsh scored an unearned run to reclaim the lead at 3-2 in the top of the second. After Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH / Munroe Falls) reached on a throwing error, he scored from third with two outs on a Joey Beals (R-Fr., Canton, OH / Perry) ground ball back to the mound that deflected off the pitchers glove. Malone would answer with a single run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3.

Walsh took the lead back at 4-3 on Beals' second infield hit of the game in top of the fourth, scoring McPeek who had singled. The Cavs then took a 5-3 lead on James Thomas' (So., Columbus, OH / Newark Catholic) first collegiate homerun in the top of the sixth inning. Szink then singled in Beals to give Walsh a 6-3 lead.

Walsh added three insurance runs in the seventh on Andrew Bonnette's (Sr., Tallmadge, OH / HS) two-out bases loaded triple to leftfield to make it 9-3.

Walsh right-hander Seth Robinson (Jr., Akron, OH / Springfield) made his first start of the season and pitched 6.1 strong innings to improve to 1-1. He fanned nine, walked three and scattered eight hits and allowed four runs. Kyle Ward (Jr., Independence, OH / Padua Franciscan) came on in the bottom of the seventh and was touched for two runs, as Malone closed to within three runs at 9-6.

Ryan McSweeney (So., Seven Hills, OH / Trinity) worked the ninth inning to pick-up his first save of the season.
