Box Score 2 (KENT, Ohio) - The Walsh baseball team ended the season with a sweep of Saginaw Valley State by scores of 13-5 and 4-1 at Kent State on Sunday. The Cavaliers finish the year 19-27 overall and 12-20 in the conference. The Cardinals finish the regular season 20-20-1 overall and 14-17-1 in the GLIAC.
In the opener, the Cavaliers had a field day as the entire lineup was responsible for at least one run being scored. Andrew Bonnette (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH/Munroe Falls) was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Joey Beals (R-Fr., Canton, OH/Perry) was also strong offensively with four RBI and two runs scored as he was 2-for-4 from the dish.
Two of Beals' RBI came in a five-run third inning when he singled to score James Thomas (So., Columbus, OH/Newark) and Tyson Lautanen (So., Painesville, OH/Fairport Harbor/Eastern Kentucky). He scored on the next play when Jordan Shank (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) reached on an error by the left fielder. Shank took advantage and made the round trip thanks to a second error on the play by the center fielder.
Sherman Kruger (So., Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) picked up the win in the game despite pitching just two-thirds of an inning. He came on in relief of starter Logan Bowles (So., Canton, OH/South) in the fifth inning as SVSU made a rally to cut the Cavs' lead to 9-5. It was Kruger's second win of the year as he closes the campaign at 2-0.
In the nightcap, early offense and strong defense throughout helped the Cavs to a 4-1 win. Bonnette led off the bottom of the frame with a triple and scored after an error on the shortstop. The Cavs pushed that lead to 3-0 in the second when Johnny Knight IV scored on an error by the pitcher and Lautanen scored on a fielder's choice during Beals' at-bat.
SVSU went on to score its lone run in the sixth on a wild pitch, but the Cavs made it up when Knight doubled to right to score Austin Szink (R-So., Canton, OH/Jackson).
Danny Roper (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) was impressive on the mound as he picked up his first win of the year to go to 1-2. He didn't allow a single run and scattered three hits as he struck out four against four walks in five innings of work. Ryan McSweeney (So., Seven Hills, OH/Trinity) picked up the save, his fourth of the year, as he came in for the final out of the game.
