Box Score (ASHLAND, Ohio) – Zac Carter hit a 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds left to send Walsh past No. 17 Ashland by a score of 74-72 in GLIAC action at Kates Gymnasium Thursday afternoon. It was the first game within the South Division for both the Cavaliers (7-6, 5-4) and Eagles (12-3, 6-3).
It's the second-straight game where Walsh has used late-game heroics via a 3-pointer to obtain the win. It's also the highest-ranked opponent the Cavaliers have defeated since they moved to NCAA Division II.
With Walsh down by one with 18 seconds left, Head Coach Jeff Young called timeout to set up a play in hopes to put the Cavaliers ahead. Carter missed a jumper, but no one could control the rebound until Trey Fletcher pulled in the ball despite being on the floor near the foul line.
Another timeout was called with 10 seconds left. Steven Carpenter inbounded the ball to Jesse Hardin Jr. who proceeded to pump fake before passing the ball to Fletcher who was open on the left wing. He was quickly engulfed in defensive pressure before he found Carter at the top of the key who fired the trey for the win.
Walsh trailed for most of the game and trailed by as many as 10. The Cavs were down 62-53 with 9:43 left in the game when they started to make their run, as a 16-4 run capped by layup from Carpenter gave the Cavs their first lead since the first half.
Fletcher finished with a game-high 24 points. He was 10-of-22 from the field and 4-of-6 from behind the 3-point stripe. He added seven caroms to help Walsh out-rebound Ashland 46-37.
Carter and Hardin Jr. both added 12 points. Carter was a perfect 3-of-3 on his bonus shot attempts and added five assists. Chall Montgomery added 10 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double.
Wendell Davis led the Eagles with 17 points and nine rebounds. Adrian Cook and Marsalis Hamilton each added 16.
The Cavaliers will look to make it three-straight as they host Lake Erie on Saturday. Tip-off with the Storm is set for 3 p.m. at Alumni Arena.
