Late Saginaw Surge Downs Cavaliers in Overtime

Box Score

(UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.) – Overtime was unkind to Walsh as it dropped its first such contest by a score of 80-72 to Saginaw Valley State at the O'Neill Arena Sunday evening. The Cavaliers (7-4, 4-2) used an 8-0 run to start the extra frame, but the Cardinals (7-4, 4-2) answered with an 18-2 run to close out the game.

As one might expect from an overtime game, the score was close throughout and featured 15 lead changes and 13 ties. Neither team held a lead larger than eight points. Strangely enough, the biggest lead for both teams occurred during overtime.

Brooklyn Wooten was responsible for sending the game into overtime as she hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining in regulation. A last second layup by the Cardinals' Anna Hall was just a bit strong and neither team could control the rebound.

In overtime, the Cavs caught fire as Holly Grober scored the opening basket and added a free throw. Wooten then scored on a layup in which she was fouled and drained the and-one opportunity before Brittni Clopton's layup gave Walsh a 70-62 lead with 3:27 to go in overtime.

That's when the Cardinals heated up and answered with their own and-one chance as Emily Wendling scored a layup and free throw. A 3-pointer by Hall then made the score 70-68 with 2:28 to go. SVSU didn't make another shot from the field the rest of the game, but it didn't need to as it sank 12 consecutive free throws to close out the game.

Wendling proved to be a force all night as she scored a game-high 29 points for the Cardinals. She shot 10-of-15 from the field and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Cavaliers were led by Alex Hochstedler who poured in 20 points with four 3-pointers.  Wooten and Sarah Stephenson both added 11, and Kelsey Funderburgh scored 10.

Walsh was hurt on the glass as Saginaw Valley outrebounded the Cavs by a 57-30 count, but a fast defense helped equal the playing field. The Cardinals turned over the ball 21 times with the Cavs directly responsible for 11 of them on steals. Grober led Walsh in that category with three.

The Cavs will look to get back in the win column as they host Grand Valley State on Thursday. Tip-off with the Lakers is set for 5:30 p.m.
