Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh fell to Wayne State by a score of 72-66 in GLIAC action at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers fell to 12-7 overall and 9-5 within the conference while the Warriors evened up at 10-10 and improved to 5-9 in the GLIAC.
Kelsey Funderburgh had an outstanding game as she scored 28 points and was 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 behind the 3-point stripe. Elsewhere she pulled down seven rebounds, dished out three assists, made two steals, and blocked two shots.
On the opposite end, Wayne State's Shannon Wilson proved to be tough to contain as well as she finished with a game-high 29 points and was 9-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
The Warriors led by as many as 17 in the second half, but the Cavaliers clawed their way back and came within a possession after a Holly Grober layup made the score 51-48 to start the fourth quarter.
Walsh eventually got within two after a pair of Funderburgh free throws in the final minute, but Wayne State answered with a layup and held off the Cavs the rest of the way.
In addition to Funderburgh, Grober and Brooklyn Wooten also scored in double-figures. Grober poured in 12 points while Wooten added 10 on the day.
Walsh now sets its attention to its arch rival Malone on Monday evening. The Cavs and Pioneers will write the next chapter in their rivalry that day with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
