Tiebreakers Help Cavs Defeate Cedarville

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Almost everything went right for the Walsh men's tennis team as it defeated former and future conference rival Cedarville 7-2 at the Klekotka Tennis Courts on Tuesday. The Cavaliers improved to 3-1 on the season while the Yellow Jackets dropped even at 2-2.

The match overall was closer than the final score indicated as the Cavaliers won four super tiebreakers, three of which came in singles play, to decide the match.

The first came in doubles play to help Walsh take a 2-1 lead. Vasily Vidmanov and Rodrigo Garcia provided that lead as they defeated Alex Totten and Joel Clark 9-8 with a 10-8 tiebreaker at second doubles. Ross Whittaker and Felix Zimmerman provided the other point with an 8-2 victory over Matt Brumbaugh and Jonathan Class at first doubles.

In singles action, Vidmanov used late-match heroics again as he defeated Brumbaugh 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 with a 10-6 tiebreaker at the top singles spot. Whittaker followed up in similar fashion at second singles with a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 win with a 10-5 tiebreaker against Ryan Shomo.

The remaining tiebreaker point went to Heitor Adegas who defeated Class by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) in fifth singles. Zimmerman defeated Totten at third singles 6-2, 6-1 and Garcia defeated Clark 8-6 at fourth singles to set up the final score.

Monday's match against Mercyhurst has now been cancelled so the Cavaliers will return to action a week from today with a men's and women's doubleheader against Daemen with a scheduled start of 11 a.m.
