Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walsh clinched a spot in the GLIAC tournament with a 67-57 victory over Tiffin Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. It's the second consecutive playoff bid for the Cavaliers (17-7, 14-5), who have now won five-straight and moved into a four-way tie for second place overall in the conference.
The consecutive playoff bids are Walsh's first in back-to-back years since it went to the American Mideast Conference tournament three-straight years from 2009 to 2011.
The Cavs never trailed in the contest, but the Dragons (17-7, 14-5) made the Maroon and Gold work hard for the win and kept the game within single digits for the majority of the game. After Tiffin's Kiley May hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 4:44 left, the Cavaliers closed the game with a 15-5 run.
The majority of those points came from the free throw line as the Cavs made all 10 attempts from there down the stretch. Jalynn Graham (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Central Crossing) hit the first two before a big 3-pointer by Kelsey Funderburgh (Sr., North Lewisburg, Ohio/Triad) put the Cavaliers up 57-52. Tiffin answered with a trey of its own, but it was the closest the visitors could get as Walsh scored the next eight points.
Alex Hochstedler (So., Fishers, Ind./Fishers) hit four of those free throws in the final minutes and finished with a game-high 20 points. She was 7-of-9 from the field and hit all five of her foul shots. Graham recorded season-highs with 16 points and 11 rebounds to become the second Cavaliers to record a double-double this season. Brittni Clopton (So., Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side, the other player in that category, almost recorded another as she pulled down 10 caroms and added seven points.
Tiffin was led by Bre Nauman with 19 points. Ali Schirmer added 12.
Overall the Cavaliers crashed the boards hard and outrebounded the Dragons 40-28. The inside game strongly benefited Walsh as it outscored Tiffin 40-18 in the paint.
Walsh will look to keep its win-streak intact in its final home game of the season against Findlay on Thursday evening. Tip-off with the Oilers is set for 5:30 p.m.
