Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Walsh baseball team opened the season today, but were defeated in both games of a twin bill against California (Pa.) by scores of 16-1 and 10-7. The Cavaliers and Vulcans are scheduled for another twin bill tomorrow at the Washington Wild Things' Consol Energy Park.

In the opener, the Cavaliers' lone run came in the top of the fourth when Andrew Stalnaker (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) singled in Austin Szink (R-Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) on a line drive to left center. Szink originally reached on an error and advanced to second on the same play.

Seth Robinson (Sr., Akron, Ohio/Springfield) took the loss. He gave up three runs on three hits and struck out four batters against three walks in three innings. Cal's Jack Dennis recorded the win.

The second game was highlighted by a seven-spot in the fifth inning for the Cavaliers. James Thomas (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Newark) started the rally with a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Eric Connor and Tyson Lautanen. Jason McPeek followed up with a home run to left field that scored Thomas and Joey Beals (R-So., Canton, Ohio/Perry). Walsh's final two runs came on sacrifice flies as Luke Caple (Jr., Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) drove in Szink and Lautanen scored Stalnaker to make the score 8-7.

Cal was able to respond with insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth frames and held on for the win.

Matt Iosue took the loss after he pitched the first 3.1 innings. Cal's Mick Fennell recorded the win while Matt Carter earned the save.

Stalnaker ended the day 3-of-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and two walks to lead the offense.

Tomorrow's doubleheader has now been moved up an hour with a first pitch at noon.
