Box Score (AUBURNDALE, Fla.) – Walsh fell in a defensively sound game by the score of 2-1 to Northwood in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Friday morning. The Cavaliers drop to 6-8 on the season while the Timberwolves improved to 8-5 after the non-conference game.
The Cavs struck first in the bottom of the first with a pair of extra base hits. James Thomas hit the first with a double to right field with one out. Luke Caple followed in the next at-bat with a double to left to bring Thomas around the rest of the way.
The score remained 1-0 until Northwood tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Connor Foley RBI single to score Dustin Lee. The Timberwolves went ahead two innings later as Lee scored again, this time on a fielder's choice.
Walsh had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, but left two runners stranded on the corners.
Matt Iosue started the game for the Cavs and pitched a gem. He gave up just one run on six hits with eight strikeouts against one walk in seven innings of work. Joe Pourier took the tough-luck loss to fall to 1-1 on the year.
The Maroon and Gold return to action in another regional game against St. Joseph's College tomorrow morning. First pitch with the Cougars is set for 9:15 at Lake Myrtle Park Field No. 8.
