Baseball Battles Back Against Alderson Broaddus

(WESTFIELD, Ind.) – Walsh capped off the Midwest Regional Crossover Baseball Showcase in thrilling fashion with a 6-5, come-from-behind win against future conference rival Alderson Broaddus at Grand Park Sunday afternoon.

The Cavaliers improve to 9-11 with the win and drop the Battlers to 7-9 on the season.

Austin Szink came through in the clutch with a two RBI single through the right side to score Tyson Lautanen and Jason McPeek for the go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth. It was the fourth run scored of the day for McPeek, who finished an impressive day as he was 4-for-5 from the plate with a pair of doubles.

Lautanen was superb as well both at the plate and on the mound. After the Cavaliers took the lead, he went to the bump in the bottom of the ninth and earned his third save of the year as he struck out the side. At the plate, Lautanen finished 2-for-3 with one run scored, an RBI, and two bases on balls.

Kyle Ward was credited with the win. He is now 2-0 on the season.

The Cavs initially got on the board in the first inning as Luke Caple singled to right to bring in McPeek for the first run of the game. Caple advanced to third on an error by the right fielder and scored on the next play as Szink brought him in on a single through the left side.

Alderson Broaddus was quick to answer as it scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.

Walsh cut into the Battlers lead in the third as Lautanen singled in McPeek, but AB went back up by two runs with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Cavaliers scored again when Caple singled to left to drive in McPeek for a third time in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-4.

The top four batters in the Cavaliers' lineup consisting of McPeek, Lautanen, Caple and Szink all had multiple hit days. In total, they reached safely in 13 of 20 plate appearances.

The Cavaliers are now scheduled to play in their home opener against Tiffin this Friday. They will host the Dragons for a four-game series with a doubleheader also taking place on Saturday. First pitch with the Dragons is set for 1 p.m. on Friday.
