Walsh Doubles Up Malone In Midweek Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(MASSILLON, Ohio) – Walsh bounced back from yesterday's sweep with one of its own in GLIAC twin bill against arch rival Malone Wednesday afternoon. The Cavaliers (16-14, 7-3) defeated the Pioneers (16-13, 8-4) by scores of 6-1 and 8-4 to vault back into second place in the conference standings.

Malone scored the first run of game one and were close to scoring a second, but Jason McPeek fired a laser to catcher Luke Caple to gun down Malone's Brenden Wells at the plate.

The Cavaliers were quick to respond on the offensive end with a five-spot as they batted around the order in the fifth.

Austin Szink started the hit parade with a double to left center and moved over on a bunt single by Johnny Knight IV. Szink traveled the final 90 feet on a wild pitch to tie the game.

After a sacrifice bunt by Brook Clark and a base on balls to Jordan Grubb, Sean Trexler singled through the left side to score Knight IV. Two batters later, Tyson Lautanen, Caple, and Andrew Stalnaker combined for three consecutive RBI singles that scored Grubb, Trexler, and Lautanen, respectively, to make the score 5-1.

McPeek added the final run with a solo home run to center in the top of the seventh.

Matt Iosue was superb on the mound as he went the distance to improve to 3-2 on the season. He allowed the one run on seven hits with five strikeouts against three walks in his seven innings of work.

In the second game, Walsh took a commanding seven-run lead and held on for an 8-4 win.

The Cavaliers' offense once again featured an outburst with a four-run fourth frame. Knight IV started the onslaught with a homer to left field to open the inning. Two batters later, Brook Clark scored from second after a couple of errors on a sacrifice bunt by Grubb.

Grub later scored on McPeek's second home run of the day. It was his ninth round trip of the season, second-most in the conference. Szink added a solo home run in the fifth to make the score 5-0.

The Pioneers added run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Maroon and Gold increased its lead when Caple scored on an error in the sixth. A pair of insurance runs were scored in the ninth on a single up the middle by Knight IV that allowed Szink and Stalnaker to score.

Logan Bowles continued his incredible season and moved to 4-0 on the year with the start. He allowed one run, unearned, on five hits and struck out seven in seven innings.

The Cavaliers will continue their eight-game road trip with a weekend series at Grand Valley State. First pitch with the Lakers is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
