Walsh Remains Deadlocked With Grand Valley After Twin Bill Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(ALLENDALE, Mich.) – Two late runs allowed Walsh to win a 4-3 opener against Grand Valley State before it dropped a high scoring 15-8 affair in a GLIAC twin bill on Saturday.

The Cavaliers are now 17-15 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Lakers are 17-11-1 overall and are tied with Walsh for third place in the GLIAC with an 8-4 mark.

In the opener, Walsh scored two in the first and two in the sixth to take the 4-3 victory. Austin Szink lit up the scoreboard first with a bases-loaded double to right to score Luke Caple and Tyson Lautanen.

After the Lakers scored three runs over the fourth and fifth frames, Brook Clark tied the game at 3-3 as his ground out to second allowed Stalnaker to score and Szink to move to third. An error on the Lakers' first baseman on the next play allowed Szink to score the winning run.

Grand Valley was limited to one hit the rest of the way as Alex Zander pitched the sixth and Lautanen took the hill in the seventh to record his sixth save of the season, third-most in the GLIAC.

Aidan Mlachak started the game and earned the win to improve to 1-1. He allowed the three runs on five hits and struck out one with two talks in five innings of work.

In game two, both teams pounded out 14 hits, but Grand Valley made the most of it with 15 runs scored between the second and seventh innings.

Walsh was down just one as the teams headed to the bottom of the fourth, but the Lakers scored seven over the next two frames to take control of the game.

Caple had an impressive game as he went 3-for-4 and hit his fifth home run of the season. He totaled two runs and two RBI in the game.

The Cavaliers and Lakers will go out it again in another doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
