Box Score 2 (XENIA, Ohio) – The Cinderella run of the Walsh Cavaliers struck midnight as they fell to top seed and nationally ranked No. 14 Grand Valley State 6-5 in the GLIAC Tournament championship game. Unless the Cavs earn an at-large bid to the playoffs, they will end the season at 29-26 while the Lakers move on to next week's regional tournament at 35-16-1.
The day wasn't without its ups, however, as the Cavs reached the championship game in thrilling fashion with a 10-7 victory over No. 6 Hillsdale thanks to a walk off three-run home run by Brook Clark in the first game of the day.
Walsh appeared to have control of the game after a five-run fifth put the Maroon and Gold up 7-4, but the Chargers scored one run in the eighth and a pair in the ninth to tie the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Cavs were down to their final out when Sean Trexler and Johnny Knight IV both singled to set up Clark. Clark eventually took a 2-1 pitch to the opposite field and cleared the right field fence to set off a dogpile celebration at home plate.
The Cavaliers were later on the opposite end of the scoreboard and reaction as the Lakers used late-game heroics to go ahead. With the score tied at 5-5, Grand Valley's Josh Griffith singled to center. Seth Johnson was on second at the time and was able to score after a fielding error. Walsh was able to get two runners on in the ninth, but both were left stranded on first and second.
Walsh was able to grab the lead early in the game with three runs in the third as Luke Caple hit a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Jason McPeek and James Thomas. Caple later scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Szink.
After Grand Valley regained the lead at 5-3, Walsh tied the game on a pair of triples as McPeek drove in Thomas before he later scored on Stalnaker's hit to right field.
As a result, both were named to the GLIAC Baseball All-Tournament team in addition to James Thomas at shortstop, Matt Iosue at starting pitcher, and Tyson Lautanen at relief pitcher.
Lautanen picked up the win against Hillsdale in relief to improve to 2-0 on the season. Both wins came in the tournament and he added a save on Friday against Wayne State. Iosue earned the win in that game after he tossed seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in the 3-1 win.
McPeek had a monstrous tournament with multiple hits in every game. He was 12-for-24 with a home run, two triples, four doubles, six RBI, and six runs scored. He ends the season on a 22-game hit streak.
Thomas went a combined 8-for-17 for an average of .471 with five runs scored and advanced his hitting streak to 11 games. Andrew Stalnaker went 6-for-20 with a home run, a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored.
