Box Score 2 (PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – Home runs were the theme on Tuesday as Walsh and Lake Erie combined for 15 on the day in a twin bill split. The Cavaliers (24-22, 15-11, 12-8) was responsible for nine of them with five hit in a 13-5 win over the Storm (15-28, 11-17, 9-11) in the opener. Lake Erie won the second game 16-12.
The five home runs ties Grand Valley on three occasions for third-most in a single game. They supplied 11 of the 13 runs. It didn't take long for the Maroon and Gold to tee off either as Tyson Lautanen and Johnny Knight IV both went yard to take a 5-0 lead.
Lake Erie was no stranger to leaving the ball park either as it hit four in the game. Two came in the bottom of the first on solo shots to make the score 5-2.
Andrew Stalnaker followed with a two-run homer in the top of the second to give the Cavs a five-run lead once again, but the Storm's Cale Giddings hit a two-run bomb in the third to the deficit back to three. It was his second home run of the game.
The only runs not scored on home runs came in the top of the sixth when Luke Caple double home Lautanen before he eventually scored on an error later in the frame. Eric Conner hit the fourth home run of the game in top of the seventh before Lautanen hit his second and final overall homer of the game with a three-run shot to center to set the final score.
Brandon Whitslar started the game and picked up the win to improve to 2-4 on the season. He gave up the five runs with five strikeouts against two walks in 5.2 innings of work.
Roles were reversed in the second game as the Storm took a 16-12 win to win the season series 3-1.
Home runs were still hit in mass as Walsh hit four more while Lake Erie added another pair. The Storm made strong use of the hits inside the park as it totaled 18 more on top of the home runs.
The Cavaliers rallied for four runs in the eighth inning as Jason McPeek scored on an error just before Austin Szink hit a three-run homer to make the score 11-8, but the Storm added five in the bottom of the frame. Stalnaker hit another three-run homer, but it wasn't enough.
Logan Bowles took his first loss of the season to fall to 6-1.
Walsh now heads to Michigan for a four-game series with Hillsdale to close the regular season. With Malone clinching the final guaranteed tournament bid for the South Division based on divisional record, the Cavs now must fight for a wild card bid based on overall conference records.
The Cavaliers currently hold a two-game lead over Northwood for the final wildcard spot. Walsh is a game behind Wayne State for the top wild card spot. Hillsdale is guaranteed a playoff spot based on its record within the North Division.
First pitch with the Chargers is currently scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
