Box Score (HILLSDALE, Mich.) – Walsh inched closer to securing a spot in next week's GLIAC Tournament with a 16-5 victory over Hillsdale Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers (28-19, 16-11) are playing for one of two wildcard spots up for grabs between them, Wayne State, and Northwood.
The Cavs didn't waste any time getting the bats hot as they put a five-spot up in opening frame. The Chargers returned the favor with five runs in the second inning, but Walsh responded with nine runs over the next four innings.
In total, Walsh scored the 16 runs on 22 hits to continue its offensive outburst in recent games. The Cavs have scored nine or more runs in seven of their last 10 games including the last three. The 22 hits are also a season high.
Every batter in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit and eight had multiple-hit days. Eric Conner had the best game of his career as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and a career-high six RBI. Jason McPeek and James Thomas also had three-hit days. McPeek and Johnny Knight IV also scored three runs on the day.
Matt Iosue started the game and picked up the win to improve to 4-4 on the season. All five runs were scored on him, but only one of them was earned as the Cavs made five errors in the game. He struck out five and walked just one in five innings of work.
The Cavs also picked up some help from Lake Erie as the Storm and Northwood split a doubleheader this afternoon. Walsh is now 2.5 games ahead of the Timberwolves with three games to play. Northwood and Lake Erie will wrap up their regular seasons with a doubleheader tomorrow.
Walsh also trails Wayne State by a half game for the first wildcard spot. The Warriors host Malone for their final four games of the season this weekend.
The Cavs and Chargers will play another single nine-inning game tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Two seven inning games are scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
