Cavs Clinch First Playoff Bid Despite Loss To Hillsdale

Box Score

(HILLSDALLE, Mich.) – One of two things had to happen for Walsh to clinch its first GLIAC Tournament bid since it made the jump to Division II: either win one more game against Hillsdale this weekend or have Lake Erie defeat Northwood in one of two games today.

Unfortunately for the Cavaliers (25-23, 16-12), it wasn't because of another victory over the Chargers (29-19, 17-13) as they fell 17-9 in another high scoring nine-inning single game.

However, the Storm came away with a 10-5 victory over the Timberwolves in the first of two games Saturday and secured the Cavaliers' place as one of the top six teams in the conference.

The GLIAC Tournament will be played at the Athletes In Action Sports Complex in Xenia, Ohio from May 12 through 15.

James Thomas started the scoring on the day as he singled up the middle to bring in Johnny Knight IV and Austin Szink in the second inning.

Hillsdale took a 3-2 lead over the next two frames before Thomas scored on a passed ball to tie the game in the fifth. The Chargers opened the flood gates after that with seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

Walsh bounced back with four runs over the sixth and seven innings which included Jason McPeek's conference-leading 14th home run of the season, but Hillsdale score seven more over that span to keep the Cavs out of reach.

Thomas had a solid day at the bottom of the order as he went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and runs scored. McPeek also had a multiple hit day with a double.

The Cavaliers and Chargers will wrap up the regular season with two seven-inning games starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Both teams have qualified for the GLIAC Tournament and will await seeding information on Monday.
