Box Score (TIFFIN, Ohio) – Steven Carpenter was sent to the line with two seconds left and provided the winning points as Walsh defeated Tiffin 87-86 in the final road game of the season. The Cavaliers improved to 16-10 overall and 9-10 in the GLIAC while the Dragons dropped to 11-16 overall and 6-13 in the conference.
The free throw proved to be clutch as Tiffin sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to one.
Walsh avenged a loss to the Dragons last month with the win. The Cavs shot extremely well and once again made over half of their shots for the fifth time in the last six games. Overall they made 30-of-58 for 51.7 percent.
To no one's surprise, the Ironton duo of Zac Carter and Trey Fletcher once again proved lethal as they combined for 55 points. Carter, the nation's third-best scorer, drained 30 points as he was 10-of-19 from the field and 3-of-6 behind the arc. He sank all seven free throws, assisted on seven other baskets, and pulled down five rebounds in the win. Fletcher was also impressive with 25 points on 9-of-19 from the field.
Chandler Vaudrin continued his recent string of strong games with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The game was competitive throughout the contest that featured nine ties and seven lead changes with the lead being kept in single digits for either side for the majority of the game. The Cavs took the lead for good when Carter sank a jumper to make the score 53-51 with 11:40 to go in the game.
The basket ignited a 17-7 run that put Walsh up by 10 with 8:16 to go, but the Dragons slowly chipped away at the lead. They closed the deficit to one on a few occasions, but Carter answered with a 3-pointer on the first and free throws after the second and third in the final seconds.
Walsh now returns home to close the season against Findlay on Thursday. Tip-off with the Oilers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the seniors being honored before the game.
