Walsh Walks Off Again In Split With Malone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Walking off has become the trend for Walsh at it came down to the last at-bat in the opening game of a twin bill against rival Malone. That's when Tyson Lautanen singled to center to allow Austin Szink to score from second and give the Cavaliers a 9-8 win.

The opening win gave Walsh (15-5) a split with its rivals as Malone (12-8) won the nightcap 10-1. The Cavs last three wins have all come in their last at-bat.

Walsh used the long ball to jump on top of Malone in the first game as Eric Conner and Szink each hit two home runs in the game. Szink's first home run was a two-run shot off the scoreboard in right center before Lautanen tied the game when he scored on a throwing error by Malone's shortstop in the bottom of the second inning.

Conner then gave the Maroon and Gold the lead snuck a fly ball just over the right field fence inside the foul pole in the bottom of the third. Szink followed with a homer over the left field fence later in the inning.

In the next frame, Conner hit his second to score Marcus Bobb and James Thomas on the three-run round trip.

Conner went 3-for-4 in the game while Szink also walked twice in addition to going 2-for-2.

Ryan McSweeney came on in relief in the sixth and recorded the final four outs to record the win and improve to 3-0 on the season. He allowed one run unearned on one hit and two walks with a strikeout.

In the second game, Malone scored seven runs over the sixth and seventh en route to the win. The Cavs had numerous opportunities, but left 12 base runners stranded in the game.

Walsh finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Jordan Grubb singled to right to score Szink. Lautanen scored Walsh's second run in the ninth when Andrew Stalnaker singled through the left side.

Mark Mittiga took the loss for his first defeat of the season to drop to 2-1.

The Cavs return to GLIAC action this Saturday as they travel to Ashland for a four-game series.
