Box Score (ELKINS, W.Va.) – Strong second and third quarters helped Walsh stave off Davis & Elkins by a score of 67-61 at the McDonnell Center on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (12-7, 9-4) moved into a fourth place tie in the G-MAC with the win over the Senators (6-13, 4-11).
With the game tied at 19-19 after a modest 6-0 run by D&E, Walsh started a run in which it outscored the hosts 34-16 over a stretch that lasted the rest of the half and into the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers opened up that push with their inside game and scored the next 10 points on drives to the basket. The first two came on free throws on drives down the lane before layups by Jill Blacksteen, Shelby Henkel, Dominique Foley, and Holly Grober put Walsh up 29-19 at the half.
In the third quarter, the balanced offense stayed consistent with eight different players scoring points. Walsh shot 56.3 percent, 9-of-16, during the frame. That momentum carried over into the early part of the fourth when Alex Hochstedler fired a 3-pointer to give the Cavs their largest lead of the game at 54-35 with 9:34 to play.
It was about that time that the Senators offense started to catch fire and nearly tied the game in a comeback attempt. D&E's Aliyah Dukes scored a 3-pointer with just under a minute to play to make the score 62-60.
At that point the Cavs started going to the free throw line and made 5-of-6 down the stretch to preserve the W.
Maycie Sales led the attack with 14 points and was 7-of-11 from the field. Hochstedler finished with 10 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Grober also added 10 points in the double-figure department.
Aliyah Dukes paced the Senators with a game-high 24 points.
The Cavs now close out its road stretch with a date in Columbus against Ohio Dominican on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
