Cavs' Bats Sting In Sweep Of Cedarville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – It was a perfect weekend for Walsh as it swept Cedarville by scores of 8-3 and 7-1 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The wins allowed the Cavaliers (11-9, 5-3) to climb back above .500 as they renewed the rivalry with the Yellow Jackets (6-14, 2-6).

Head Coach Tim Mead's crew didn't waste any time getting the bats going as the Cavs stung first with three runs in the first inning. Marcus Bobb scored the first run on a sac fly by Andrew Czech before Avery Janning homered to left field with Eric Conner on base.

Walsh then added a five-spot in the fourth to make the score 8-0. Cobe Hutchison brought in Ross Etgen on a single to center before Conner opened the flood gates with a double down the third base line to score Bobb and Hutchison. He later scored on a Janning double to center. Janning then scored on a single by Brenden Spaulding.

Justin Hovorka picked up his first win since shutting out No. 7 Minnesota State to improve to 2-2 on the season. He allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks. He struck out five on the day.

Game Two also saw the Cavs score early with four runs in the second. Spaulding reached first on a bunt single in an attempt to move Janning on the base paths, but a throwing error allowed Janning to circle around to score. Spaulding later scored on a ground out. Bobb provided the final punch on a hard hit down the third base line to score Hutchison and Alec Debruler.

The Jackets added one in the fifth, but Walsh answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to set the final score. Conner scored after a fielding error at second base, Czech followed on a double by Spaulding, and Janning scored on a wild pitch.

Aidan Mlachak went the distance in an impressive performance with one unearned run on five hits and a walk. He struck out six in the win as he improved to 1-2.

Walsh will return to action Tuesday at Tiffin in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
