Walsh Splits With Slippery Rock

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.) – Walsh split its final non-conference twin bill of the season with an 8-5 win and a 12-9 loss against a talented Slippery Rock squad on Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers moved to 22-19 on the season while Slippery Rock, the No. 6 team in the Atlantic Region, now stands at 28-14.

It didn't take long for the Cavs to get the bats warmed up as they opened game one with a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. Avery Janning started the scoring with a sac fly to center that allowed Eric Conner to score before Brenden Spaulding doubled down the left field line to bring home Andrew Czech.

In the second, Joey Holiga was able to score after Marcus Bobb hit into a fielder's choice before Andrew Czech sent one deep to right field that also scored Bobb and Cobe Hutchison. It was his team-best 15th home run of the season.

After the hosts added three in the bottom of the third, both Bobb and Conner went deep to left field for the Cavs' final two runs.

Dylan Corsi started the game and picked the win to move to 1-1 on the year. He went four innings and struck out three in the game.

Game two was a nailbiter and a heartbreaker for the Maroon and Gold as Slippery Rock won in walk-off fashion. Walsh scored all of its runs in the third and fourth to take a 9-3 lead, only to see SRU come back and score two in the fourth and three in the fifth to make it a 9-8 contest. Slippery Rock proceeded to hit two home runs in the seventh to win the game.

Alec Debruler led the charger in the nightcap with a three-run home run to put the Cavs up 9-3. Spaulding also added three RBI while Holiga brought in one run. Holiga was 3-for-4 in the game while Spaulding and Debruler also had multiple-hit games.

Drew Saunier took the loss to fall to 0-1 in his first decision of the season.

Walsh will be back in action against another big opponent in Division I Kent State. First pitch with the Golden Flashes is set for 6 p.m. at Schoonover Stadium.
