Cavs Fall Against Hillsdale, But Fight On Past Findlay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(MASON, Ohio) – It was a long day and late night for Walsh in its second day of the G-MAC Tournament, but the Cavaliers will fight to play another day. The Maroon and Gold were downed 1-0 in a pitcher's duel with Hillsdale before a 12-10 victory over Findlay in the nightcap elimination game.

In what has been an offensive-led tournament, Walsh played one of the best defensive games in the opener against Hillsdale. Unfortunately for the Cavs, so did Hillsdale.

The only run of the game came in the first after the Chargers' second batter tripled to center and was hit in two batters later on a double. From there, starter and G-MAC First Team selection Nick Bebout allowed just one hit in the final seven frames. The tough-luck loss dropped him to 4-2 and he finished the game with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Offensively the Maroon and Gold was close to tying the game on multiple occasions. Walsh hit safely five times and was aided by four Hillsdale errors, but the Cavs left 10 runners on base in the game. Five innings were ended with runners in scoring position.

The nightcap saw the bats come alive as the Cavaliers scored early and often. Even though the Oilers had their offense clicking by normal standards, Walsh found itself up 11-5 by the end of the fourth inning and every batter had registered at least one hit.

However the Oilers didn't go down quietly. After both teams exchanged runs in the sixth, Findlay put up a four-spot in the seventh to make it a two-run game, but Drew Saunier was able to navigate through the final three frames for the rare three-inning save, his second of the season.

Brenden Spaulding provided the go-ahead run with a single up the middle that plated Andrew Czech. He finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Marcus Bobb joined him as he too hit safely thrice in six at-bats with three RBI and two runs scored. Eric Conner, Avery Janning, Alec Debruler also had multiple-hit days, while Jacob Beachy had a multiple-RBI game.

Walsh now moves on to play Kentucky Wesleyan in another elimination game at 1:30 p.m. on Legacy Field. The winner will play the loser of Malone and Hillsdale in another elimination game to close the day.
