Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team continued their season-best seven game winning streak on Thursday (Jan. 16) evening at Alumni Arena. The Cavaliers won 99-72 over the Alderson Broaddus Battlers after pulling away in the final 27 minutes of game time.
Walsh is now 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference, now sitting second in the G-MAC Point Ranking System.
The first ten minutes of the contest featured a back-and-forth battle as the lead remained under three points for both teams. Leading 17-16, Darryl Straughter converted a three point play as Walsh led 20-16 with 9:23 left. Straughter's layup and-one began a 19-7 run by the Cavaliers over 4:01. JT Shumate scored seven points on the run as Alphonso Baity and Christian Montague both hit three pointers. The lead grew to 36-23 with 5:22 left in the first half. The Battlers trimmed the lead to seven with 2:21 remaining but Walsh scored the final two baskets of the half, leading 45-34 at halftime.
Both teams exchanged buckets in the opening three minutes of the half. With a 56-44 lead, Straughter hit his second straight three pointer as Walsh scored eight straight points. The 8-0 run was part of a larger 11-2 run, where Mark Mokros made a pair of threes. The lead was pushed to 21, 67-46 with 13:41 left. The Battlers pulled within 17 points with ten minutes left but Walsh answered with a 26-10 run for a game-high 33 point advantage. Alderson Broaddus scored the final six points, leading to the 99-72 final score.
Five players scored in double-figures with Shumate scoring 26 points. He made 11-13 field goals with four three pointers along with his nine rebounds. Straughter had five threes out of seven field goals in a 20 point evening. Montague was active in all areas as he chased a triple-double. He finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and five steals. Mokros added 14 points on four threes while Baity had 12 points off the bench.
Walsh shot 58% in both halves and finished the contest with a 58.5% shooting percentage while making 18 three pointers.
The Cavaliers will head to Ohio Valley on Saturday (Jan. 18) for a G-MAC matchup with the Fighting Scots at 3:00 PM.
