Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Playing for the tenth time at home due to a relocation, the #23 Walsh Cavaliers women's basketball team rolled to their tenth straight win on Thursday (Jan. 16) at Alumni Arena.
The Cavaliers held the Alderson Broaddus Battlers to 13 points in the first half, winning by a final score of 97-50. Walsh is now 15-2 overall and 8-0 in the G-MAC.
After a 1:10 of scoreless action, Walsh outscored the Battlers 22-0 over the next 6:25 as the game was quickly put away. Five different players scored in the opening period as Mayci Sales led with eight points and six rebounds. Quionche Carter added six points and two steals on the run. Alderson Broaddus closed the quarter on a 5-0 run but Walsh led 22-5 after ten minutes.
The Cavaliers outscored the Battlers 26-8 in the second quarter. Dean scored nine straight Walsh points at one point as she nailed three triples. Walsh started the quarter with a 15-2 run, leading to Dean's long range attack. Sales put up six points in the second quarter as she closed the half with a game-high 14 points. Walsh led 48-13 at halftime.
Walsh outscored AB 12-4 in the first four minutes of the second half, pushing Walsh's advantage to 43 points. Tyler Newkirk and Carter each had three points on the run while three other players found the basket. Alderson Broaddus trimmed the lead to 36 with an 11-4 run over three minutes. Newkirk capped an 11-2 burst in the final 3:22 with a three pointer, Walsh led by 45 after three periods at Alumni Arena.
The lead remained above 40 for the duration of the fourth quarter as Walsh outscored the Battlers 22-20 in the last frame. The Cavaliers went wire-to-wire in the 97-50 win against the Battlers.
Ten of the 11 players that played in the game scored with five in double figures. Sales finished her seventh double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds on 10-13 shooting in 22 minutes. Carter filled the stat sheet with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks, all while shooting 8-9 overall (one three and one free throw). Dean ended the night with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Megan Ball and Newkirk scored 11 and ten points, respectively. Newkirk was active in other categories with five assists and three steals.
Walsh's offense shot over 55% in all four quarters, ending with a season-best 61.5% shooting percentage (40-65). The Cavaliers made seven-of-15 three pointers and was 10-for-14 from the free throw line. Walsh had 60 points in the paint for the evening.
The defense was another story as they held the Battlers under ten points in the first two quarters and 13 for the first half. The five point first quarter was tied for the second lowest points allowed in a quarter in the Division II era (four was the lowest) and was the fifth time an opponent has scored five points in a period (2nd in a non OT) since joining D2. The Battlers shot 15.4% in quarter one, finishing with 33.3% overall and 12.5% from deep. The Cavaliers forced 28 turnovers, leading to 41 points.
Walsh travels to Ohio Valley on Saturday (Jan. 18) for a matchup with the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots at 1:00 PM.
