Cavaliers Go Wire-to-Wire in Road Win at Ohio Valley

VIENNA, West Virginia - The Walsh Cavaliers men's basketball team pushed their winning streak to eight games as they led for all but 11 seconds in a 98-60 win over the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon. 

Walsh moved to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference in the wire to wire win on Saturday. Six players finished in double figures for the Cavaliers. 

Mark Mokros nailed two three pointers in the first minute and Walsh was off and running. Ohio Valley closed the gap to two with four straight points but Walsh was able to quickly respond. The Cavaliers went on an 18-2 run (15-0 at one point) with four players adding points. JT Shumate scored six straight points, Christian Montague hit two threes and Mokros added four points. The lead expanded to 24-6 with 11:21 left in the first half. One minute later, Alphonso Baity fueled a 14-2 Walsh run with eight straight points. Walsh's lead became 41-13 with 3:22 left. Over the final three minutes, each team went on a 5-0 run with Walsh closing the first half with a 46-18 lead. 

Walsh outscored the Fighting Scots 52-42 in the second half, opening a lead of as many as 41 in the final 20 minutes. The Cavaliers won the game 98-60, the largest margin of victory on the current winning streak. 

Darryl Straughter led all scorers with 20 points in the game as he made six field goals (four threes and he went 4-4 from the free throw line. Baity finished with a near triple-double as he totaled 16 points (7-10 shooting) with seven rebounds, eight steals and five assists. Montague added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Shumate scored 13 points in 27 minutes while Mokros ended the afternoon with 12 points. Conner Wess was perfect from the floor (4-4, 3-3 from deep) in an 11 point effort off the bench. 

Walsh shot 55% (39-71) for the game after shooting 56% and 54% in each half, respectively. The Cavaliers made 14 three pointers and added 37 points off the fast break. Walsh forced 20 turnovers, including 12 steals, turning into 27 points. 

The Cavaliers return home for a key matchup with the Hillsdale Chargers on Thursday (Jan. 23) night at 7:30 PM. Hillsdale is tied with Walsh and Findlay with a 7-1 conference record. The Chargers are tied for first in the G-MAC Point Ranking System and Walsh is fourth after Saturday's contests.
